An intuitive figurative painter, Australian Anthony Lister has a unique style, in which he defies the rules of composition, and creates beautiful, fragile, floating, painterly figures, often depicting tawdry, dark and uncomfortable aspects of Human Condition. Whilst his subject matter is often disturbing, Lister’s work has a fragile quality with it’s faint lines, detritus and subtle pop-art statements.
His works, which frequently references cartoon imagery and comics, and his experiences in the world of graffiti and street art, are very often produced as pairs / diptychs / companion pieces, which are mirror images of each other.
Anthony has spent the last couple of years travelling, living and working throughout Europe, and the USA. He has exhibited widely both in Australasia, Europe and America, as well as recently undertaking a research residency in Berlin.
In August / September 2008 he joined WK Interact in a spectacular two man show 'WK - LISTER' at Elms Lesters.
Art historian Ben Jones' fascinating and in depth interview with Anthony Lister is published in The Elms Lesters Book
